Residing from Coonabarabran in New South Wales, Emma Thompson has transformed not only her riding style but the horse that she shares an incredible bond with “Eddie", into an Australian championship winning team in under 6 years.
“I had a little team of showing horses before ever having thoughts of transitioning over to the rodeos scene. I was offered to take this eye catching dark brown gelding into ownership from a very close family friend. Once picking this gelding up and saddling him up for the first time it was obvious he was not suitable for any type of rider or to make a show horse what so ever.A suggestion was made about turning this horse that i named “Eddie” into a barrel horse prospect! At the time i had absolutely no idea what I was getting myself into! I persevered with “Eddie” Each and every afternoon as it was just a new addiction and love for the sport of rodeo.
My very first Rodeo was the end of 2017 - Attunga rodeo and from that day onwards my love for this crazy horse ‘Eddie’ and this adenine jam packed sport just grew on me each and every day".
During the 2018 ABCRA season Emma took home the ABCRA Southern Zone Barrel Racing Rookie Title, Australian Barrel Racing Rookie Title and 3rd in the Australian standings for barrel racing. In September 2018 at the Stroud Rodeo, Emma won the Ladies Barrel Race which qualified her for the World Championships semi-finals held in Oklahoma USA putting not only her name but also her home town on the map, travelling all over the US in 2018. Travelling and competing in Oklahoma gave Emma the opportunity to witness great competitors and to meet World Champions amongst the opportunity while Emma was over in the States.
In 2021, Emma turned not only her love to barrel racing but also to steer undecorating, with help along the way “Eddie” turned into the ultimate all-round rodeo horse being consistent and very successful in both events.2022 Emma and “Eddie” went into their 4th National Finals Rodeo in January for both events sitting in the top 10 in Australia for the barrel racing and number 2 in Australia for steer undecorating. After the three-day race at the national finals Emma and Eddie walked away with the 2022 Australian Rookie Steer Undecorating Title and runner up Australian Champion.
“Rodeos have taken me a long way in such a short period of time. I have travelled far and wide all over Australia and America competing , and have been lucky enough to be very successful and reach one of many goals along the way” says Emma. When she’s not competing Emma loves spending quality time with her family and adventuring “as life is too short to waste any time that is given”.
Year 2023 Goal, "love the horse first and the sport second! While Eddie is at his peak with a $10,0000 dollar lead sitting number one in the country for the barrel racing title, number two for the steer undecorating title and leading the all-round Australian title, we will give the 2023 season our best crack yet again and enjoy the journey of travelling down the road each and every weekend, I wouldn’t want to do it any other way with another horse thats my best mate, travelling partner and my ride or die who carries me through life"
